What the heck is FrowningSmile?
FrowingSmile was created to be the first every automated human Happiness measurement system. We query twitter and blogs to get a decent idea of how people are feeling around the world. Our system then generates a report based on this information. Unlike other ways of gathering Happiness our system is only ever delayed 1 day at a time, meaning it can reflect depending on world events. (Such as a large death, or relegious event)
FrowingSmile can be used by those who are intrested in gathering statistics, the media to put a point accross, or just someone who wants to know where there country ranks in the system! Updates to the rankings are produced every single day at 12AM GMT.
Why don't you have X Country?
It takes a tad bit of time to add a country so in turn I've started of with some of the largest. I'd love to start including some more counties so let me know via Twitter (@DDClarke). As soon as I get a request via my twitter account I will get to adding that country. I will also be adding more over time.
How is your data licensed?
You can use the data and or charts from this website, but I'd like a link back here! It helps people find out about this service and in turn keeps it growing at a nice stedy rate. Creative Commons 2.5 is the legal license.
How does the system work?
I expect this question to be asked more times than George Bush was to resign! I don't want to give a complete breakdown as I fear that some may try to change the rankings etc, however; The basics of the system is it has a programed list of phrases that show someone is happy, it also uses emoticons and tone analysis. I used researched data to get the best results for the system and I truly beleive that the results would be just as good as going out and asking x amount of people.
Why is x country so high \ low?
There are a few (1 at this point) countries that are problematic. This could be due to diverse language, problems in finding enough sources or another data. The result will always be a higher ranking. If a site is lower than you expected, then sorry but that's what the system is showing for good reason!
